How to Choose an Interior Designer in Bangalore: 7 Questions to Ask

Finding the right interior designer in Bangalore isn't just about portfolios. These 7 essential questions will help you evaluate any studio — and tell good ones apart from great ones.

Choosing an interior designer in Bangalore is one of the most consequential decisions you'll make for your home or office. The right designer becomes a trusted partner — someone who translates your vision into reality without stress. The wrong one can mean months of frustration and cost overruns.

After completing projects across Bangalore — from commercial offices in Whitefield to luxury penthouses in central Bangalore — here are the seven questions we'd recommend asking any interior designer before you sign.

1. "Can I see projects similar to mine in your portfolio?"

This is the most important question, and many clients skip it.

A beautiful portfolio of luxury villas doesn't tell you much if you need a 2BHK apartment design. Ask specifically for:

  • Projects of a similar size (sq.ft) to yours
  • Similar space type (residential vs. commercial, apartment vs. villa)
  • A similar budget range — good designers have work across tiers; ask to see what they've done at your budget level

What a great answer looks like: They show you specific, varied examples with honest context — including challenges they faced and how they resolved them.

2. "What is your design process, and how do you involve me in decisions?"

Every designer has a process. The question is whether it's structured and whether it gives you visibility.

At minimum, a professional process should include:

  • Discovery / brief session (understanding your needs)
  • Concept presentation (mood boards, material palette)
  • Design development (detailed layouts, 3D renders or detailed drawings)
  • Procurement and execution (vendor management, site supervision)
  • Handover (snag list, final walkthrough)

Ask specifically: "At what points will you need my input? When will I see designs before anything is committed?"

Red flag: A designer who moves to execution without showing you renders or material samples first.

3. "How do you handle budget overruns?"

This is where projects go wrong — and most clients don't ask about it until it's too late.

A transparent designer should:

  • Give you a detailed itemised quote, not just a per-sq.ft number
  • Be clear about what is fixed vs. variable
  • Have a process for flagging potential overruns before they happen
  • Not mark up materials without disclosing it

Ask: "If costs come in higher than estimated, how will you communicate that, and what's your process for adjusting scope?"

What to expect: Some flexibility in materials and scope is normal. Unilateral cost additions without prior approval are not.

4. "Who will be my point of contact throughout the project?"

This matters more than it sounds.

In large design firms, you meet a senior designer in the pitch — and then hand off to a junior team you've never met. Your calls stop being answered. Decisions get made without your input.

Ask: "Will you personally be supervising my project, or will it be handed to another team member? How often will we communicate?"

What AADO does: Every project has a dedicated design lead who is your single point of contact from brief to handover. We don't disappear after the sale.

5. "Can you provide references from past clients I can speak to?"

A confident, quality designer will always be willing to connect you with past clients. If they hesitate or only offer written testimonials, that's a yellow flag.

When speaking to a reference, ask:

  • Was the project delivered on time and on budget?
  • How was communication throughout?
  • Were there any issues — and how did the designer handle them?
  • Would you hire them again?

6. "What is included in your fee — and what isn't?"

Understand exactly what you're paying for. A common confusion: the design fee vs. the total project cost.

  • Design fee — the designer's professional fee for their time and expertise (typically 10–15% of project cost, or a flat fee)
  • Project cost — materials, furniture, labour, vendor charges, etc.
  • What's extra — civil work (often excluded), electrical/plumbing changes, building society approvals

Ask for a written scope of services before signing anything.

7. "What is your timeline estimate for a project like mine?"

Delays are common in interior design. The question is how a designer manages them.

Typical honest timelines in Bangalore:

  • 2BHK apartment: 3–5 months
  • 3BHK / large apartment: 4–6 months
  • Villa / penthouse: 6–9 months
  • Small office fit-out (under 2,000 sq.ft): 6–10 weeks
  • Large commercial space: 4–6 months

Ask how delays are handled — whether in material delivery, civil work, or client approvals. A professional designer will have clear protocols.

One More Thing: Trust Your Instinct

After evaluating portfolios, checking references, and comparing quotes — trust your gut. You'll be spending months working closely with this person. Do they listen? Do they ask about your life and how you use your space, or just about your "style"? Are they honest about what won't work?

The best interior design relationship is a collaborative one — not a transaction.
